    The test!

Took that test for the clerical job yesterday at 9:00 a.m. and finished at 11:00!!!  It was a lot more involved than I thought it would be.  The pages of filing exercises and spelling were a piece of cake, and the English one was long but I'm sure I did OK on it.

However, I was appalled at the Math test.  I thought it would contain mostly everyday stuff.  Boy, was I wrong.  There was a lot of fraction conversion and probability and equations and all of it was in the form of story problems (which I hate with a vengence!).  Why would a simple clerk need to know how to find the area of a circle or rectangle?  And percentages and fraction conversions and things like that?  Gosh, I felt like I was taking the SATs again.  If I didn't pass it, I can retake the part I didn't get.

Don't know if I passed the whole thing or not yet.  I passed the typing test on the first try (they give you 3 chances to get at least 60 words per minute.  It doesn't look like I'll be in line for the Library job, as they explained that they try to stay "in house" on those jobs.  Since they've laid off several teachers and such, those people get first dibs on jobs like that.  If they don't get any takers, then it goes out to folks like me.  I asked about the part-time clerk list that they draw from to fill in for sickness leave and the gal in the office told me it was a short list because most people can't pass the tests for it.  Well, duh!!!!

So, I don't know what's going to happen with all of that.  At any rate, it was hopeful that I got through the tests and had only trouble with some of the math.  I answered everything but had to use educated guess for some of it.  It's been over 40 years since I've taken that math in school!!!!  And most of it, I don't use anyway.  Well, I'm not going to agonize over it anyway.  Thanks for all the good wishes and still keep your fingers crossed for me!  It ain't over yet!

I'm a little surprised at such things for a job like that too, who would have thought? Sometimes things can be ridiculously difficult for no good reason and this sounds exactly like that but you never know. Bless you, have a good day.

Girl, where in the world is this clerical job? the House of Commons in England? Man, they sure test for unusual things. I would have thought grammar, English, style and certainly typing would have sufficed. Gees marie!!!
