10月31日 Hocus Pocus - I Put A Spell On You
This is my all-time favorite movie at Halloween time: Quote
10月20日 Can't get enough of this show... Rented this series through Netflix to rewatch it and am amazed all over again how wonderful it is. Not only does it tug at your heartstrings to watch these two actors display their love for each other, but it deals with other social issues as well.
For those of you who have never seen it, it is about how Katherine (Linda Hamilton) becomes the victim of a brutal knife attack and is thrown from a car, wounded and dying. Vincent (Ron Perlman) picks her up and takes her back to his home in the tunnels beneath the big city (New York) in hopes that his Father (who used to be a doctor) will be able to save her. While she lays there, healing from all the cuts and wounds, her head bandaged so she cannot see him, they fall in love. She doesn't know he is the product of a cruel experiment and is half-lion, half-human. Although he is reluctant to show her his true self, when he does, she embraces him even more and vows to help the poor society beneath the city (she is a district attorney) and keep his secret safe. He can never show himself above (that's why he wears the cloak with the hood!) as someone would hurt him or worse. However, he IS extremely strong and willing to defend himself. He has that cat-6th-sense about danger, especially when Katherine is in trouble, and rushes to her side when she needs him.
I just saw my favorite episode---the Halloween one just the other day. When Katherine goes to a big Masquerade Ball, dressed as a Countess, she sees Vincent there (he's good at sneaking into places). This is the one time of the year he can roam the streets of the city amid all the trick-or-treaters, unbothered by screams and stares. He and Katherine get to tour the city and see the wonders above ground, outside his world. It is truly heart-wrenching to watch this, even today, because people still do not accept those who look so different. They tend to shun the ugly and the disfigured, even with all the tolerance we are taught.
At any rate, I love to see the freedom Vincent feels to be able to walk with other humans as one of them. That's what makes this episode so special. Hopefully by the time Max is an adult, the human race will tolerate those who are different better than our generation has. 10月9日 Check out the Math...
9月19日 The poet, Henry Gibson We lost another great one a couple of days ago---the intrepid Henry Gibson, famous "flower" child at Laugh-In. I loved to watch him stand and recite his cute little poems like this: The Cobra
The cobra always wears a smile As he creeps across the ground He grins like he's up in the clouds I think that he turns on. Dogs Are Better Than Ants Dogs are better than ants Because you don't have to bend so far to pet them In addition, they are sturdy old muzzlers Who fetch us our slippers, papers, and twig chunks Twig chunks But most of all, they stay out of jelly jars and Never go squish if you happen to step on them. The Eyelash The eyelash is a friend to man. It lives to serve the eye. It fights the dirt and dust and grime, And keeps the eyeball dry. Flick, flick. Flick, flick. It's busy as a bee. Flick, flick. Flick, flick. It's helpin' you and me. Animal Trio
The bullfrog is my pal true blue. He don't smoke or drink or chew. His only hang-up is he sniffs glue. If I was a bullfrog I would too. I just found out what the aardvark does When he's feeling kinda blue and wants to get a little buzz. He sneaks off down to the edge of the beach And turns himself on by sniffin' bleach. The hedgehog is a groovy friend. When he dresses like a hippy he's the livin' end. He's only got one hang-up when he's at the logs. He turns himself on smokin' dental floss. I will certainly miss Henry Gibson and his big colorful flowers. He was 71 and had been fighting cancer. Rest in Peace, Henry. [You know I was appalled reading an article today about all the famous people who have died this summer---and they left poor Henry out completely! How could they?!!] 8月20日 Talking about YouTube - Victor Borge, The Piano TunerQuote YouTube - Victor Borge, The Piano Tuner 8月16日 LaLanneisms Came across this website last week: http://www.jacklalanne.com and just HAD to share these words of wisdom with you all. For those of you young enough NOT to know who Jack LaLanne is, here is a short bio of the famed bodybuilder of the 50's and 60's, who was probably one of the first to jump on the vegetarian band wagon.
His many strength and endurance feats are indeed a wonder. Check out the site for more details on these: Jack LaLanne is an American fitness, exercise, and nutritional expert, celebrity, lecturer, and motivational speaker who is widely referred to as "The Godfather of Fitness". LaLanne gained worldwide recognition for his success as a chiropractor and bodybuilder, and for his incredible and prodigious acts of strength and endurance. Through his career, LaLanne has won numerous awards including the Horatio Alger Award from the Association of Distinguished Americans, and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Hall of Fame.
The Jack LaLanne ShowThe Jack LaLanne Show is the longest running health and fitness show in history, airing from 1951 to 1985. The show began as a local program on San Francisco’s ABC television station KGO-TV and was eventually syndicated on the ABC network throughout the U.S.A. and Canada, and worldwide on the Armed Forces Network. Critics said the show would be off the air in six weeks, but it lasted just a bit longer at 34 years. In addition to the Jack LaLanne Show, Jack has published numerous books, created countless health and fitness videos, appeared in films, marketed health and exercise equipment and vitamin supplements, and even as a singer recorded songs with Connie Haines. At the young age of 94, Jack LaLanne continues to work out every morning for two hours, spending 1 ½ hours in the weight room and ½ hour swimming. Jack LaLanne lives with his wife Elaine in Morro Bay, CA. So here are a few LaLanneisms that should be noted: "Your waistline is your lifeline" "Don't exceed the feed limit"
If you just follow this advice, you will live long and prosper! Jack will turn 95 in September of this year! 8月8日 Kseniya Simonova - Sand Animation (Україна має талант / Ukraine's Got Ta... WOW! If you have a few minutes (this is 8 minutes long) and can download this easily, give it a watch---it is truly amazing and an art form new to me. However, this woman has a real talent that will leave you shaking your head in awe. I was amazed at the tearful response of the audience (as this is done live) until I viewed this myself. There are other sand animations (see Sand Fantasy at YouTube) out there that are good, but this gal is probably the best of them all. Sit back and tell me if you aren't touched by this... Quote YouTube - Kseniya Simonova - Sand Animation (Україна має талант / Ukraine's Got Ta... 8月5日 Get a load of this kid... First off---I GOT MY CAR BACK AND IT RUNS GREAT!!!! The parts and labor are covered for a full year, so it BETTER be OK or it'll go back. Can't believe how good it feels to drive it again---I have to get used to it all over again. But, it "completes" me. HA! Saw this article about an up and coming tennis pro and couldn't resist sharing:
"All parents think their two-year-olds are the brightest, quickest kids on the block. (And they are, they are.) But there's one tyke who amazes not just his parents, but the tennis community in Britain. Meet two-year-old Jonah Ziff, future Wimbledon champion, if the experts are to be believed. According to the Telegraph, the toddler was on the court tagging along with his older siblings, and just picked up the game. As Jonah's mom put it, "We were totally gobsmacked." (That's British for stunned.) Junior has mastered backhand, forehand, and overhand serves, and he has already aced the competition of kids four years his senior, while playing in diapers and sucking on a pacifier. (Perhaps that's the secret to his moves.) The tennis coach says the kid is a natural. He also says he's "obsessed"—getting lessons four times a week. So much for Legos, tricycles, and blocks. The future involves plans for young Jonah to compete in a junior tournament this year." (by Claudine Zap) Go HERE to see a short video of this kid. It makes me wonder if this kid's spirit isn't that of Bobby Riggs (who died about 3 or 4 years ago), or even one of the other old pros from yesteryear! For a kid that young to be so good at something like tennis (that takes years to perfect) seems really strange, especially at the tender age of TWO! Bobby Riggs didn't start playing tennis until he was about 12, mainly because he was poor and tennis was a "rich man's sport" back in those days, so he'd never had the chance to play earlier in life. But by the time he was a teenager, it was like the sport was made for him. Hmmm...how could someone be so good at such an early age??? How do you explain it? 7月22日 Beat you to it!Here are the winners of this year's Washington Post's Mensa Invitational which once again asked readers to take any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or changing one letter, and supply a new definition:
1. *Cashtration* (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.
2. *Ignoranus*: A person who is both stupid and an asshole.
3. *Intaxication*: Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realize it was your money to start with.
4. *Reintarnation*: Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
5. *Bozone* (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating.
The bozone layer unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
6. *Foreploy*: Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose of getting laid.
7. *Giraffiti*: Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.
8. *Sarchasm*: The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
9. *Inoculatte*: To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
10. *Osteopornosis*: A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
11. *Karmageddon*: It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right?
And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
12. *Decafalon* (n.): The gruelling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
13. *Glibido*: All talk and no action.
14. *Dopeler Effect*: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
15. *Arachnoleptic Fit* (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.
16. *Beelzebug* (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
17. *Caterpallor* (n.): The colour you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.
I can really relate to the Beelzebug--and I'll stand with the flyswatter on the bed until I find it and "cast it out!"
I'll post the rest of the definitions where common words have alternate meanings another day---don't want you to hyperventilate by reading too much!
Have a great day!
7月20日 Check out this movie... The other night, we saw "AUGUST RUSH" ....again. My son, M, had never seen it and since my Hubby and I saw it one night when he was gone, we wanted to share it with him. If you like good music and a fairy-tale type of story, this one's for you. “Listen . . . can you hear it? The music . . .” The music is the blood, the life force that flows through the arteries and veins of this movie. It’s all about the music and how it connects these three human beings, a son and his parents. August Rush: “The music. I thought if I could play it, they would know I was alive. And find me.” This movie was truly a pleasure to watch. The key to enjoying it is to get passed the far-fetched or slightly exaggerated premise, the touch of corniness, and the conveniently coincidental occurrences and you’ll be just fine. If you let these things bother you, you might not like it. Trust me, it’s worth the view if you take it at face value, especially if you are a fan of music. Speaking of the music, what a soundtrack! I haven’t heard anything this good since the movie Once. Mark Mancina, Hans Zimmer and crew have created a musical masterpiece for this film. It has got to be an Oscar nominee in the music category. The fairy tale story will draw you in and give you hope. You will find yourself routing on Evan, a.k.a. August Rush (Freddie Highmore), to reach his destination of finding his parents. The performance by Freddie is truly special border lining incomprehensible. This review was from www.smartcine.com , but no name was attached to the review. I loved Robin Williams in this dramatic role. Freddie Highmore was perfect as the orphan boy. The only thing I found that bothered me was when he was playing his guitar. When they showed closeups of his hands (supposedly HIS hands), the hands that played were too mature to belong to him. However, the music WAS spectacular enough for me to overlook this blooper. My hubby and I both wept at the ending....again. It IS a fine family film and I'd recommend it to any of you! 7月1日 Say Yes to Yes Man We watched the new DVD just out starring Jim Carrey called "Yes Man" last night and laughed outselves silly. It was a very entertaining film (but not for little kids), rated PG-13, for some sexual inuendo. Jim Carrey is such a card in it (as usual) but a good job acting too. It deals with a man who takes a pledge to start saying "yes" to everything instead of his normal "no". The whole positive attitude literally turns his life around. When he tells his buddys what he did, they take advantage of the fact he can't say "no" and make him do some crazy stuff. Jim is the perfect guy for this movie (and one wonders if the movie was written just for HIM).
5月4日 Petrocelli Just love this theme song! It's from the 1970 show, PETROCELLI, which starred Barry Newman in the title role as a lawyer who always had to pull for the underdog and always won. Although Barry may not be what one thinks of as "handsome," he still has that charisma and such a velvety, sexy voice---how could you NOT love him?!!
Tony Petrocelli was an Italian-American Harvard-educated lawyer grew up in South Boston who gave up the big money and frenetic pace of major-metropolitan life to practice in a sleepy city in the American Southwest called San Remo (filmed in Tucson, Arizona). He and his wife Maggie (played by Susan Howard) lived in a trailer in the country while waiting for their new house to be built, and traveled around in a beat-up old pickup truck. Tony hired Pete Ritter (played by Albert Salmi), a local cowboy, as his investigator. An interesting technique used in the TV series was showing the actual crime in flashbacks from the perspective of various people involved. The flashbacks, naturally, differed depending on whose recollections were being shown. 4月28日 Jake Shimabukuro's Uke If you recall, I put a YouTube of this guy (Jake Shimabukuro) playing "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" on my space a couple of months ago. I found this small bio of him at www.rootsanblues.ca that is right on the money:Jake’s music defies categorization, playing jazz, blues, funk, classical, bluegrass, folk, rock and just about everything in between. Experimenting with various guitar effect pedals and heavily amplified riffs, he is known as the “Jimi Hendrix of the ukulele” for his creativity on the tiny four-string, two-octave instrument. Jake is also a master at extracting the pure natural acoustic sound of the uke. In 2007, his cover of George Harrison’s “While My Guitar Gently Weeps“ was circulated on the internet, resulting in emails of amazement from across the globe. It was last reported to have been viewed over 1.5 million times! Backstage at his show with the Honolulu Symphony, he had the honor of meeting Harrison’s wife, Olivia, backstage where she described to him that she had felt George’s presence with her when Jake played his rendition of Harrison’s song. Jake has performed with or opened for a wide variety of artists including Diana Krall, Fiona Apple, Bobby McFerrin, John Hiatt, Blues Traveler, Stephen Bishop, and Jimmy Buffet and he is featured on Ziggy Marley’s Grammy Award winning, “Love is My Religion” (2006). He also contributed to the soundtrack of the Jimmy Buffett produced film, “Hoot”. His own cd, “Gently Weeps” is receiving high acclaim throughout the world, giving wing to the energy and imagination of this innovative young talent. I recently purchased his "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" album and was astounded by the emotion he can evoke from this tiny instrument. It is a baritone Uke, which is slightly larger than a standard uke. I used to have one, before I took up classical guitar and gave it to a young boy, Grant, who was like a little brother to me. I wonder if he still has it. At any rate, I LOVE this whole album. It is rare that one finds an album to listen to over and over, without skipping any tracks! Jake performs a lot of his own compositions, which are totally delightful. I have NEVER heard such soul from a performer in all my years (except maybe through the Hi-Los). He is indeed one of the finest musicians out there. What a breath of fresh air! I hope you'll give a listen to his version of the old tune, Misty, by clicking on my space! 4月22日 Bizarre Books Came across this unusual listing of actual books and if their titles don't make you at least smile, I'd be surprised: The Pleasures of the Torture Chamber, by John Swain (1931)
Teach Yourself Alcoholism, by Meier Glatt (1975)
Build Your Own Hindenburg, by Alan Rose (1983)
The Bright Side of Prison Life, by Captain S.A. Swiggert (1897)
Scouts in Bondage, by Geoffrey Prout (1930)
Do Snakes Have Legs, by Bert Cunningham (1934)
How To Become a Schizophrenic, by John Modrow (1992)
and finally,
Reusing Old Graves, by D. Davies and A. Shaw (1998)
Just some light reading, huh???!! 4月19日 Remember Doc Elliot??? I was about to change my music/song above and decided to find out if any of you actually remember this show??? I know CarolDee does, 'cause we never missed an episode when it was on. This medical drama (which only ran during 1974) starred the handsome James Franciscus and was about a drop-out doctor who gave up his career in New York City to become a blue-jeaned G.P. in Gideon, Colorado. Doc's new patients, most of them as independent as he, were spread over a 600-square-mile area of rugged terrain, and his house calls (better named cabin calls) were made by plane or in a four-wheel-drive camper outfitted with medical equipment. Mags Brimble was the wido of the area's former G.P. and Doc's helper and confidante; Barney Weeks the owner of the general store; and Eldred McCoy a bush pilot. There were lot of attractive mountain scenery in this series. The main theme was written by Marvin Hamlisch (be sure to click on my "space" to hear it).
I loved this show, not just because Doc was so easy on the eyes, but because he was such a caring and determined character, who didn't do just what was popular, but had the guts to do what was right. I loved all of Franscicus' shows (especially Mr. Novak and Longstreet) and was saddened when he passed away so young with lung cancer. I'd bet this show could really take off in today's culture, even though it didn't have any bad language or sexual situations. It was just darn good drama and a beautiful show to watch. ![]() 4月8日 Unusual themes from TV Did you know that I have over 200 TV themes in my collection? However, my most treasured ones are the "unusual" ones---you know, like where someone else is singing the theme (like the one you are hearing now by Sammy Davis, Jr.). I love this rendition of the Mary Tyler Moore theme. Several themes have become best sellers over the years---like Hill Street Blues, Hawaii 5-0, Peter Gunn, Mission:Impossible, etc.---and some are still heard in current commercials---The Odd Couple, Mr. Ed, etc. I have the Bonanza theme sung by the whole cast, which is a special one. Several themes were sung by famous people---Johnny Cash sang The Rebel theme comes to mind. Several of the stars of the shows sang their own theme songs occasionally--like Carol Burnet and Chuck Norris. All in all, I find TV theme music to be fun and intriguing to listen to---they are so short, you can't be bored at all. So, I hope you will enjoy this sojourne into my theme world. By the way, I get most of my themes from a great site called http://televisiontunes.com. They've expanded to more and better quality in the last year and almost any theme you want is there now! So, take a break, sit back and find your favorite themes---it's a great stress reliever. 2月18日 Dennis Weaver? The other night I was delighted to see the movie, A TOUCH OF EVIL, which stars (of course) Charlton Heston. It is a wonderful B&W mystery directed and starring Orson Wells. But what I noticed this time around is that there was another familiar face---Dennis Weaver. He was a very young Weaver that I wasn't 100% sure it WAS Dennis, so I looked him up in my multitude of Heston books. NOWHERE could I find a mention that he was in this movie. I was about to give up when I discovered a mention of him in Chuck's, "IN THE ARENA" book. Here is what it said: "I was responsible for a key casting. Dennis Weaver was just finding fame in 'Gunsmoke'; I called him up and persuaded him to play a crazy motel keeper for us. He was wonderfully loony." He was more than just loony---he was borderline psychotic! This movie came out in 1958, BEFORE "Psycho" and Weaver's character was more scary (IMHO) than Norman Bates. I was really pleasantly surprised by this performance and felt like I'd just seen a diamond in the rough! There are very few pictures of Weaver and Heston in this film, so I've included one of Weaver in his early "Gunsmoke" casting. This is close to what he looked like in TOUCH OF EVIL: ![]() I know this movie is not everyone's cup of tea, but it has become quite a cult film with weird filming angles and that haunting Henry Mancini music in the background. A much overlooked film---but one you should try out if you can! 2月9日 Talking about YouTube - Bette Midler - You Made Me Love ahhhh Watch YouI LOVE this last Johnny Carson appearance by Bette Midler. So, take a moment and review it. I dare you NOT to laugh!
Quote Talking about YouTube - Bette Midler - You Made Me Love ahhhh Watch You 2月3日 The Penny Lincoln's birthday is nearly upon us. And that brings to mind the anniversary of the Penny--with his portrait on it. It came out in 1909, just 100 years ago on his birthday. Did you know:1. The likeness of President Lincoln on the penny is an adaptation of a plaque created by sculptor Victor David Brenner. His work had so impressed President Theodore Roosevelt that he was the only person asked to work on a portrait for the penny.
2. In 1909, Abraham Lincoln was the first historical figure to appear on a U.S. coin when he was portrayed on the penny to mark his 100th birthday.
3. In 1943, the U.S. government started using steel in place of copper in pennies to conserve copper which was needed by the U.S. military during the height of World War II.
4. The Lincoln Memorial was added to the back of the penny in 1959 to mark Lincoln's 150th birthday. The penny was the first and only coin to have the same person appear on both sides.
5. The first US penny was designed by Benjamin Franklin and minted in 1787 from pure copper.
6. In 2005, Edmond Knowles cashed in his world-record collection of 1,308,459 pennies ($13,084.59) at a Coinstar in Flomaton, Alabama, because he needed to pay for home repairs, 4.5 tons of pennies might be considered a complete collection and 2月1日 Dirty car?
